A lovely book to read. I had a lot to think about after finishing Ackee and Roti. This book takes you places, I swear. When I first picked it up, I figured this was another run-of-the-mill biography. But, my god, was I glad to be wrong! The author really tells her story with the right amount of emotion. It was just enough to tug on my heartstrings but not so much that it was overly dramatic. I could easily empathise with all her struggles like she was my family member. Fantastic read all around, definitely worth reading.

The book outlines hardships that are common among other books of this nature. However, the manner in which they are communicated is wholly unique.Purewal portrays herself as a character that believes in the humanity of people. She holds strong principles and is quick to forgive the misgivings that she comes across. The sincerity with which the story is told is remarkable, and as such, proves this book to be worthy of a recommendation.

It is a very personal book providing an insight to how tough life can be for a young lady. It is not eat easy to write about such issues. Most people would rather just try and forget than write.
This has been a wonderful little sleeper hit of the year. Narinder Purewal tells her story as a contemporary South-Asian living in a Western country. The voice of the novel is raw and engaging. Purewal speaks to both sides of her struggle, disapproval from her family, and yearning to build a better world for her children. That makes it a book suitable for all ages and cultural backgrounds.Purewal’s morals and beliefs are appreciated for the authenticity they bring to her character. And ultimately, the rollercoaster of her ups and downs makes this a very hard book to put down.
